13-DEC-2007: Mobil 1 - Official Sponsor - World Performance Car
MOBIL 1 NAMED OFFICIAL SPONSOR OF 2008 WORLD PERFORMANCE CAR AWARD
December 12, 2007 – Toronto, Canada
Organizers of the World Car of the Year Awards today announced that Mobil 1, the world’s leading synthetic motor oil, has been named the official sponsor of the World Performance Car of the Year award for 2008. Now in its fourth year, the World Performance Car award is part of the World Car of the Year Awards program created in 2003 to recognize and reward automotive excellence on a global scale. The 2008 World Performance Car will be announced at the New York International Auto Show on March 20, 2008, during the show’s media days.
“For more than 30 years, Mobil 1 has been the recommended oil for the world's top high performance vehicles,” said Nancy Carlson, strategic global alliances manager, ExxonMobil Lubricants & Specialties. “It was a natural fit to bring Mobil 1 and the World Performance Car Award program together to honor these vehicles and the original equipment manufacturers who build them, in their quest to become the top performance car in the world.”
The 2008 World Performance Car award winner will be chosen from an entry list of 12 nominees selected by World Car jurors representing 22 different countries around the world.
While the winner of the overall World Car of the Year Award must excel in a broad range of attributes, there is a segment of the car-buying public for whom performance – in its broadest sense – overrides all other priorities. Candidates for the World Performance Car award must demonstrate a specific and overt sports/performance orientation. They must satisfy the same availability criteria as for the overall World Car of the Year award.
Entrants may be chosen from that list of eligible vehicles, or they may be newly introduced variants that satisfy the same criteria, but are derived from existing rather than brand-new models. In all cases, they must have a minimum annual production rate of 500 vehicles.
World Car jurors will vote in January 2008 in order to establish a top-ten shortlist. The winner will be voted on and chosen from those finalists as tabulated by the international accounting firm KPMG.
The 2008 World Green Car, World Car Design of the Year, and the overall 2008 World Car of the Year will also be announced at the New York International Auto Show on March 20, 2008, during the show’s media days.
The inaugural World Performance Car award went to the Porsche Cayman S in 2006, followed by the Audi RS4 in 2007.
