WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR AWARDS: 2005 Jurors

	MIKE ALLEN United States Associate automotive editor: Popular Mechanics magazine
Mike Allen has been the associate automotive editor at Popular Mechanics since 1986. He's the magazine's test driver for instrumented testing for all comparison tests and writes extensively about automotive maintenance and repair. Reviews of new cars, light trucks and motorcycles, as well as additional feature writing, also fill his days. Allen started his automotive career as a freelancer and spent several years at Sandy Corporation, a training and consulting firm in Troy, Michigan. A Michigan native, he attended Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Graduating from Michigan State, Allen was an active autocrosser and amateur sports car racer active in Porsche Club and SCCA. His racing career brought him to SCCA and IMSA professional racing licenses, driving stints in more than a dozen endurance races and an overall win in the Nelson Ledges 24-hours, as well as 11 world land speed records.

Masatsugu Arimoto has been a full-time freelance automotive journalist since 1988 and regularly contributes to the above magazines. He formerly worked for Nissan Diesel Motor Co. as a designer of heavy and medium trucks from 1978 to 1988. Arimoto is a jury member for the Japan Car of the Year, the Japan Good Design Award, the Auto Colour Awards and a board member of the Japan Automobile Journalist Association.
	DR. HORST BAUER Austria Motoring Editor, Kurier
Horst Bauer is based in Vienna, Austria and heads the weekly motoring-supplement of the nationwide newspaper Kurier, the biggest of its kind in the German language. A University of Vienna philosophy graduate, Bauer started his freelance career working as a theatre critic and TV host of a German language program on Italian TV before switching to automotive writing in 1987. He now heads the "Motor-Kurier" supplement since 1995 and is not only road-testing cars for more than 15 years but has also sampled a wide range of driving-experiences: off-roading on the Rubicon-Trail, track-testing WRC-Rally-Cars, riding the LeMans-Winning Viper.
	LUC BAZIZIN France Reporter - France 2 TV
Luc Bazizin is a reporter for a number of TV shows on France's TV network "France 2". Some of the shows he contributes to are: Journal de chroniques Automobiles, "Télé matin " and "Au bout du compte". In addition, he is also the special events reporter for the prime time show "Envoyé Spécial". He is also "chef de service" for the programme "Au Service Economie", again on France 2 TV.
	JOHN BENTLEY South Africa Deputy Editor, CAR
John Bentley brought university qualifications in language and engineering to a career in motoring journalism that began 25 years ago. He has worked for a range of South African motoring publications, and is currently deputy editor of CAR (ABC circulation 110 000), the country's largest-selling automotive magazine.

Dan Carney is a career freelancer who started writing about motorcycles and motorsports 15 years ago. He continues to ride motorcycles, especially for trips into the city. Carney specializes in writing about new technology, using his location in the Washington, D.C. area to focus especially on safety and environment-related developments. He races a Swift DB-1 Formula Ford in Sports Car Club of America National races and especially enjoys the opportunity to track test new racecars. He has authored two books, "Honda S2000" and "Dodge Viper," published by Motorbooks International.
	JEREMY CATO Canada Senior auto writer: Globe and Mail Megawheels; Host: Report on Business Television
Jeremy Cato is an award-winning print and broadcast journalist who has covered the auto industry for 20 years. He is the senior auto writer for the Globe and Mail's Megawheels section and hosts the weekly television show Car/Business on ROB TV (Report on Business Television). His work has appeared in Report on Business Magazine (ROB), B.C. Business, Moneysense magazine, as well as syndicated newspapers across Canada. In addition, he was host and executive producer of "The Car Show," a live hour-long radio show broadcast across the country as well as two television shows "The Car Pros" and "Drivers' Seat." As an automotive journalist, Cato is an expert on cars and trucks - the issues, the products and the players - from the inside out. During his career, Cato has won more than two dozen awards for journalistic excellence. In 2003, he was named (Canadian) Automobile Journalist of the Year for the second time (the first was 1999).

Currently, car columnist and the editor-in-chief for Carlife Magazine. The company has a twenty year history. Moreover, the company is the pioneer of automobile magazines. The number of circulation and readers are the highest of any Korean magazine.
	WILLIAM CHOU Taiwan Chief editor: Car News International
William Chou is a mechanical engineer who has been writing about the automobile since 1993 when he joined Car News International as editor. He was promoted to the position of chief editor in 2003. Chou was also the chief editor of Option Tuning magazine. Chou is a rally enthusiast and won several rally championship titles from 1996 to 2000.
	ROBERT COLLIN Sweden Staff writer: Aftonblade
Robert Collin is a journalism graduate who began his career writing for all types of newspapers and magazines before specializing in automotive journalism beginning in 1984. He wrote about cars for the Swedish magazine Teknikens Värld from 1984 to 1998. He is best known for his campaign to force Mercedes to withdraw their A-Class car from the market so that the chassis could be redone, and ESP added, before starting to sell the car again. Collin won Sweden's top journalist prize in 1998 as a result of his article on the Mercedes car. Collin has been writing for Sweden's leading daily newspaper Aftonblade since 1999.
	BRIAN COWAN New Zealand Editor-at-large: Autocar
New Zealand-born Brian Cowan began his working career as a civil engineer but a life-long passion with motorcycles saw him begin to write part time about bikes in the late 1960s, taking the plunge into full-time freelance journalism in Sydney, Australia in 1973. Cowan lost a fight with a truck (and his right arm) in 1977, but stayed in motorcycle journalism, editing "Two Wheels" magazine for several years. Returning to New Zealand in the mid-1980s, he shifted emphasis to cars and trucks. A former editor of "New Zealand Autocar," he is currently associate editor of "New Zealand Truck & Driver," writes an auto column for several regional newspapers and contributes regularly to international automotive technical magazines, including "Engine Technology International," "Testing Technology International" and "Vehicle Dynamics International." He is a former president of the New Zealand Motoring Writers' Guild and has won several Qantas media awards for automotive journalism.
	MATT DAVIS Europe (Steering Committee Member) European-based correspondent: AutoWeek in the United States, Auto Express and Octane in the United Kingdom, Gente Motori in Italy and Genroq in Japan
So far as auto enthusiast publications go, Matt Davis is the only American correspondent living and working in Europe. He contributes regularly to AutoWeek in the United States as chief European correspondent and can count some 20 additional publications around the world as frequent clients. He has also written books on various car subjects, particularly in the areas of design and designers. He currently calls northern Italy home.
	XIA DONG China Editor-in-chief: China Auto Pictorial and Cars For You
Xia Dong began his automotive career working for Mercedes and then Ferrari as sales manager. He became an automotive journalist in 1999 working for the Chinese edition of Auto Motor Und Sport. Shortly thereafter he and a team of journalists created two Chinese car magazines, China Auto Pictorial and Cars For You. They now produce an annual Auto Catalogue highlighting the "best new" vehicles. In addition, Dong founded, in 2001, the Chinese Car of the Year Awards.
	PETER FELSKE Germany Editor-in-chief: Auto Bild magazine; Publisher: AS Auto Publishing
Peter Felske began his career in 1978 working for the Morgenpost and writing principally about rally racing. In 1983 he became chief editor for Auto Zeitung and worked there until 1988 when he moved over to Auto Bild magazine and became its editor-in-chief. In 2002 he also assumed the position of publisher AS Auto Publishing in addition to his editor-in-chief responsibilities.
	DANIEL FERNANDEZ Malaysia Managing editor: Asian Auto Magazine
Daniel Fernandez is a motorsports enthusiast who began his journalism career as a writer for the Asian Auto Channel in 1998. He has since broadened his writing to include all aspects of the automobile. He joined Asian Auto Magazine in 2001 as a freelancer and has since been promoted to managing editor of the publication.

Dominique Fontignies is a career freelancer who started writing about the car industry and automotive design 20 years ago, at the age of 19. He started to write for various automotive publications in Belgium and, in 1989, he also created the European Automotive Design Competition, aimed at discovering young designers across Europe. He today works for two weekly newsmagazines in Belgium where he writes tests of new vehicles and stories on car design. Earlier in 2004, he was behind the creation of Design Magazine, a new luxury lifestyle quarterly. He's also the founder of the European Automotive Design Awards, granted each year to carmakers to celebrate the quality of their cars' design.

Akira Fujimoto is a member of the Japanese Automotive Magazine Chief Editor Association. He is also on the Japanese Automotive Hall of Fame board of directors. He has been the president and chief editor of Car Styling since 1979. Fujimoto began the Japanese Car Design Awards in 1983 and continues his participation to this day. He sits on the jury of a number of international competitions, notably, the International Car Design Competition, the RJC Car of the Year, Automotive News' Concept Car of the Year, the Louis Vuitton Classics Concours and the World Automotive Design Competition.

	LEONID GOLOVANOV Russia
Leonid Golovanov, born in Moscow in 1968, joined automotive journalism in 1995 as reporter of russian automotive newspaper Autoreview. Now, 10 years later, he still stays with Autoreview - now as deputy editor responsible for road tests, crash-tests and special technical issues. In year 2000 awarded as the best automotive journalist in Russia.
	GRAHAM JOHNSON United Kingdom (Steering Committee Member) Chairman, International Engine of the Year Awards
Graham Johnson started in motoring journalism 10 years ago when he joined the editorial staff of industry titles Automotive Management and Automotive International. Then, following a brief freelance career contributing news to CarWeek and a buyers' guide column to regional newspapers and Auto Ireland, Johnson moved to UK & International Press to edit the launch issue of Engine Technology International. Remaining at the company, he is editor-in-chief of what has become UK & International Press Automotive Magazines Division, Britain's largest group of technical car magazines, encompassing Engine Technology International, Testing Technology International, Tire Technology International, Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology International and the latest title, Vehicle Dynamics International. As well as finding time to have had a regular, weekend motoring program on London's Capital Radio, Johnson is also chairman of the International Engine of the Year Awards.

Maxim Kadakov started in motoring journalism 12 years ago after graduating from Moscow State Technical University. He is an observer of Autoreview, the biggest russian automotive newspaper with circulation of 220000 copies twice a month. Several years ago Kadakov was a jury member for the famous Car of the Century Awards. He has become Russia's two-time Automotive Journalist of the Year. Kadakov specializes in writing single and comparison cars tests, reviews of new cars, automotive exhibisions, car plants.

Gultekin Kara started his career as a reporter at Otostop weekly magazine in 1997. After two years, he became a motoring editor for the Aksam newspaper, a daily national newspaper in Turkey. In 2000, he started his own TV program at Skyturk and continues to be correspondent for Sky News in Europe. Kara became the editor-in-chief for the weekly Automania magazine in 2003. He contributes to both the Aksam newspaper and Automania on a daily basis. Kara lives in Istanbul and is fluent in English and French.

Pulitzer Prize-winner Dan Neil writes for the LA Times full-time. He began his career working as a copy editor of classified ads in the weekly automotive section of the News & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina. He then moved on to six years of freelance stints for Car and Driver magazine and The New York Times until he was hired in Los Angeles last September. On Monday, April 5, 2004, Neil was named the Pulitzer winner in criticism for reviews of automobiles that blend his technical expertise with offbeat humour and cultural observations. Neil told Reuters in a telephone interview that day: "I am stupefied, very excited and honoured to be in the company of the LA Times' great staff effort," adding that he has long aspired to be the first automotive journalist to win a Pulitzer.

Jim Scoutten began his career in television with 15 years of general interest broadcast journalism working in TV news as reporter, anchor, producer and news director for stations in Honolulu, Phoenix, Seattle, Savannah, Georgia, and the greater Houston area. In 1991 Scoutten began to contribute freelance automotive reviews to the independent TNN show, Road Test Magazine, which became Motor Trend Television in 1995. In 1999, following the sale of Petersen Publishing to a group of investors, Motor Trend TV seamlessly became Car and Driver Television. Scoutten continued his work as senior producer, primary writer, field reporter and host. In 2003 Scoutten was instrumental in establishing Car and Driver Radio with the series host, Alan Taylor. Scoutten appears regularly on the show series, providing vehicle reviews heard in more than 80 radio markets and on XM and Sirius Satellite Radio.
	HORMAZD SORABJEE India Editor, Autocar India magazine
Hormazd Sorabjee is widely acknowledged as India's most respected automotive journalist. He established Autocar India as the leading and most influential automobile magazine in India. Hormazd began his career with The Indian Auto Journal in 1986 where he pioneered the concept of automotive journalism and road testing in India. Since then, Hormazd has been closely involved with the auto industry and market and his articles have appeared in all major publications in India and abroad. He is considered an authority on the Indian automobile market and is widely quoted by the media. He hosts the very popular 'Auto Selector' section on CNBC channel's 'The Auto Show' to give consumer advice to viewers. Hormazd participated actively in motor sports from 1985-1994. The highlight of his career was overall second place in the gruelling 4,000km Great Desert Himalaya Rally in 1988. He is also the only Indian journalist to have driven a Formula One car.
	JON-WINDING SØRENSEN Norway Editor-in-chief: BIL magazine
Jon-Winding Sørensen has been an automotive journalist all his life even though he graduated as a mechanical engineer. He contributed to foreign magazines until he founded Norway's first independent motorcar magazine 30 years ago. He is editor-in-chief of BIL, still Norway's biggest and most influential independent motoring publication. In addition, he regularly contributes to two specialist magazines, one for the motoring trade and the other about trucks and vans. Both magazines are published by Bilforlaget AS. Sørensen also contributes to the group's web site, www.bilnorge.no.

Michael Stavropoulos began his automotive writing career working for the very magazine where he is now chief Editor. Beginning in 1986, he was their photographer and illustrator in addition to writing car reviews. In 1990, he began working for Auto Motor und Sport as their technical editor; then deputy editor in 1995. He returned to 4Wheels magazine in 2000 as the chief editor - a position that he still holds today.
